DENZEL WASHINGTON, UN MODÈLE AMÉRICAIN
Director : Sonia Dauger
Art director : Laurent Seince
Motion design : Martin Negro
The art direction for this project revolved around fractured glass. It aimed to evoke a fractured american society embodied by the figure of Denzel Washington.
We also chose to add heavy grain and a papery touch, to mimic old photographs of the actor.
Here we have a good example of all the techniques I used to mimic the different properties of glass without using plugins. I used shape layers as effect layers and added the "transform" effect to have the deformations. And then I could stack as many color or blur effects on top of it to add realism or style. For the pieces of glass closer to the camera I just blurred the shape layers and precomped them. Then I animated them falling at different speed to add depth.
In the case of text documents highlights we decided to ditch glass deformations in order not to disturb the reader too much.
Audio documents were highlighted using a simple waveform complementing the global art direction.
For the packshot's title animation I tried different animations. I quite liked this one but it was a bit too complex and too similar to the other movements in the shot. So we finally decided to go with a simpler apparition, stylized with a blur and random characters revealing.
The final packshot animation. I used time remapping to emphasize the slowmo effect. I think the final readjustment of the pieces on the right is a nice touch.
The film is availible until April 4th 2023 here :
